Ever wonder why diet plans or pills do not work? Have you ever thought that maybe they are not meant to? If they did work, who would the weight loss industry sell the diet plan or pills to? The skinny people? I don't think so. You need to find out how to be healthy, not just thin.
Sure, they work for a while. Some with great results, but as soon as your off the plan or the pill, the pounds come right back. That is because they help you treat the symptom, not the cause. The cause being your bad diet and/or eating habits.
The company's that push the plans and make the pills know this. As a matter of fact, they love it. Because as soon as the pounds come back, so do their customers.
First Things First
How often do you put first things first? Well, before you can answer that, you have to know what should be first. Let me suggest to you, that the first thing in your life, before your job, before your friends, even before your family, should be your health. Without your health, you have nothing. You can not work, be with your friends, or enjoy your family.
As I am sure your have heard, yet choose to ignore, heart disease is the number 1 killer in America. Obesity, is the number one cause of heart disease. See the conection? If you think about it, if your health is poor, you push yourself ever closer to not having a life. As in dead...
Odds are, you know what to do about this: Eat a healthy diet, stay within your optimum weight rang, give up smoking, if you smoke, and exercise. But do you do this? Obviously not, because obesity and diabetes rates keep going up here in the good ol' U.S.of A. Right about now, about two-thirds of Americans are overwieght or down right obese. It get's even worse, we are now passing this condition on to our children.
Granted, none of us are going to live forever. This does not mean that we should be helping the grave digger keep his job by killing ourselves. Yes, killing ourselves. If you are not doing what you can to live, then you are doing what you can to die. When it comes to your health, doing nothing is just as bad as doing the wrong thing.
How Much Do You Eat?
The US Dept. Of Agriculture estimates that the average person in the United States eats .5 lbs of meat, 1.6 lbs of dairy products, .2 lbs of fats and oils, .8 lbs of fruits, .7 lbs. Of vegetables, .5 lbs of grains, and .4 lbs of sugars per day for a total of 4.7 lbs. of food per day.
Let's just say, that from the age of 16 to the age of 76, (a 60 year span) the average American eats just a dash over 100,000 lbs. of food in their lifetime.
As a life necessity, next to breathing and sleeping, eating is what we do most. Yet, it is one of the least looked at, or cared about, parts of our lives. We put more effort in choosing what we will watch on T.V. than we do choosing what we will put in our mouths.
Here's the kicker, it is not so much the amount of food that you eat, it is the type of food that you eat, that is doing the real damage.
What's For Dinner?
Meatloaf and mashed potatoes? Maybe some cream corn to go with it? That is one of the staple meals eaten every day here in America. Sounds good to me. And for the most part, it is good for you. But, when this meal is your main source of supplements and nutrition for the day, it isn't.
Why, you ask? Well, it is because for the rest of the day you did nothing more than eat "filler" foods, drink soft drinks or coffee, and basically stuffed your gullet with one form of crap or another. One "good" meal will not make up for all the harm you did to yourself throughout the day.
What's sad is, if you prepared this meal like most people prepare meals now-a-days, with instant potatoes and canned corn, even this dinner of meatloaf and mashed potatoes could be bad for you, but we'll get to that later...
What To Do? What To Do?
If you are looking into losing a few pounds, or to truly improve your health, your best bet is to change your diet. Why change your diet? Because the one you have now, is the one that got you to where you are.
Keep in mind, no two people have the same nutritional needs. So there is no "one size fits all" food or diet plan. Even your diet plan will change throughout your life, depending on your age, lifestyle, and activity level. My best advice for you is to learn what has worked for others, why it worked, how best to apply it to your life, and then do so.
That is my intent here. I intend to help you find the nutrition you need, tell you why it works, and how you can use it to improve your health. It is up to you to take this information and apply it to your life. So let's get started. "Here's to your health."
Lifes Blood, Water
Water, is your life's blood. We all know that we can not do without it, but, you can do without all the stuff that can be found in water. Things like chlorine, aluminum, fluoride, lead, or copper from pipes, even estrogen.
The "stuff" that is placed in, or found in, our tap water may not be bad for us in very small amounts, but over time, it can build up in our systems and start to do some real harm. Take for example aluminum, it has been linked with Alzheimer's.
Research is still up in the air on this, but why take the risk?
The fact that we are about 65% water, every tissue and cell in our body is dependent upon it, and that on average we require about half a gallon of water a day to function properly, is the reason that I recommend that you do what you can to make the water that you drink as free from contaminants as you can.
How do you do this? Easy, you...
Clean Your Water
Many of us buy bottled water, this is fine if you are on the go and need a take along, but for every day drinking, it can be very expensive. Even a waste. Most of the bottled water that we buy is nothing more than tap water that has been purified by reverse osmosis. You can do this at home. Save a small fortune and cut down on the contaminates in your drinking water.
Ways to clean your water;
The least you can do, is boil your water before you drink it. Bit of a pain, but it helps to kill some of the stuff swimming around in your drinking water.
A step up from boiling your water is to run it through a Pitcher filter. A pitcher filter will take out some of the impurities found in tap water and they are relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain. The down side is that the filters need to be changed out regularly or they will become breading grounds for bacteria. That's not a good thing, but it is easily avoided with a fresh filter.
Better still, is a fitted water filter. These can range a great deal in price and quality. From a simple faucet filter to a reverse osmosis drinking water system.
A faucet filter hooks up just like it says, on your faucet. For ease and speed, as well as price, this is the way to go. If you need a drink or to fill a pot with cooking water, you just flip the switch and the water runs through the filter. To fill the sink to wash dishes or the dog, you turn off the filter and it comes out the main faucet.
No half steppin for you? Want to go full throttle ahead? Then you need a Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System. This system usually fits under your sink and hooks up to the incoming water line. Filters can last from three months to a year, (depending on how bad your water is and how large your use of it is) and most come with a separate water dispenser that you mount next to your regular faucet. How cool is that?
